At week 19 a protective coating is forming on your baby's skin, and the senses are developing quickly.
Your baby this week
- Vernix
- A white, waxy coating is forming on the skin to protect it from the fluid around it.
- Senses
- The parts of the brain for smell, taste, hearing, sight and touch are developing.
- Hair
- Hair is beginning to grow on your baby's head.
What you might notice
- Aches in your hips and lower belly as ligaments stretch.
- Side-sleeping feeling more comfortable. A pillow between your knees can help.
- Clearer movement, for many people around now.
- Dry, itchy skin over your bump. Mild itching is common; strong itching is worth mentioning.
Call your midwife, doctor or maternity unit today if
- You have bleeding, or fluid leaking from your vagina
- You have tummy pain that doesn't go away, or regular tightenings
- You're being sick so often you can't keep fluids down
- You have a fever, or it burns or stings when you pee
Any time of day or night. You will never be a nuisance for calling.
Coming up
Your anatomy scan.
Halfway.
Questions to bring to your next appointment
- What did the anatomy scan show about growth and the placenta?
- Is there anything about my blood pressure I should watch for?
- Which signs mean I should call rather than wait?
For your partner
Book something to look forward to around the halfway point. A day out, a meal, an early night. Halfway is worth marking.
