Week 14 is the start of the second trimester. Your baby is making faces, and you may finally be feeling more like yourself.

Your baby this week

Expressions
Your baby can squint, frown and grimace, as the facial muscles get to work.
Soft hair
Fine downy hair called lanugo is starting to cover the skin.
Practice
Your baby is practising swallowing and sucking.

What you might notice

  • More energy and appetite for many people.
  • A stuffy nose, from extra blood flow. It can last the rest of pregnancy.
  • Bleeding gums. Keep up gentle brushing, and see a dentist if it continues.
  • A bump that's starting to show.

Call your midwife, doctor or maternity unit today if

  • You have bleeding, or fluid leaking from your vagina
  • You have tummy pain that doesn't go away, or regular tightenings
  • You're being sick so often you can't keep fluids down
  • You have a fever, or it burns or stings when you pee

Any time of day or night. You will never be a nuisance for calling.

Coming up

Until about week 28

Checkups are often every four weeks. What happens at each visit.

Weeks 18–21

The anatomy scan, a detailed look at how your baby is growing.

Questions to bring to your next appointment

  1. When is my anatomy scan?
  2. Is a dental check a good idea now?
  3. Are there any classes or groups you'd recommend?
Add your own, then bring the list with you.

For your partner

It's a good moment to start talking about the bigger things: leave, money, where the baby will sleep. Not all at once, just started.
