Week 12 is a milestone for many people: the dating scan, often the end of the worst sickness, and the uterus rising up out of the pelvis.

Your baby this week

Reflexes
Your baby can curl their fingers, open their mouth and kick, though you can't feel it yet.
Kidneys
They're making urine, which becomes part of the fluid around your baby.
Proportions
The body is starting to catch up with the head.

What you might notice

  • More energy for some, as the first trimester ends.
  • Less need to pee as your uterus rises out of the pelvis, for a while.
  • Dizziness if you stand up fast. Get up slowly and keep drinking water.
  • A small bump beginning to show, especially if this isn't your first pregnancy.

Call your midwife, doctor or early pregnancy unit today if

  • You have bleeding, or cramping pain low in your belly
  • You have sharp pain on one side, pain in the tip of your shoulder, or you feel faint
  • You're being sick so often you can't keep fluids down
  • You have a fever, or it burns or stings when you pee

If the pain is severe or you feel faint, call emergency services.

Questions to bring to your next appointment

  1. What did the scan show, and is my due date the same?
  2. When is my next appointment, and what will it involve?
  3. When should I start to feel movement?
Add your own, then bring the list with you.

For your partner

If you saw the scan together, ask for a copy of the picture. It can be a lovely thing to keep.
